Wyoming: Devil’s Tower
Located in the northeastern corner of Wyoming, Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed it the first national monument in 1906. Several Native American tribes call it the Bear Lodge and consider the tower to be sacred. The Cheyenne and Kiowa people believe that the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens. Geologically speaking, “it’s made of volcanic material and is connected in some way to an existing or previously existing volcano.” Scientists and researchers are not exactly sure as to how it came to exist.
