Connecticut: The shallow graves beneath New Haven Green
Just before Halloween of 2012, Hurricane Sandy felled the famous Lincoln Oak on the New Haven Green. A passerby noticed that the roots of the tree contained a skull and other bones. The fallen tree exposed several colonial-era skeletons in its roots. Recent investigations seem to show that there could be 10,000 people whose remains are still there under the Green. Some theorize the people died during a terrible epidemic—though no one’s sure of what. The graves are unmarked and the remains are now being studied by Yale and UCONN specialists.
